How many steps a day do you need?

How many steps a day do you need for health? A large 2022 study found benefits rising up to about 6,000 to 8,000 steps for older adults and 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults.

The short version

  • Any increase from where you are helps.
  • A 2022 analysis of 15 studies found lower death risk with more steps, leveling off around 6,000 to 8,000 a day for adults 60+ and 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults.
  • Add steps gradually, about 500 to 1,000 per day each week.

10,000 steps is a nice round number, but it did not come from a health study. Research gives a more useful answer.

What the study found

A 2022 meta-analysis in Lancet Public Health pooled 15 groups of adults. Risk of death fell as daily steps rose, then leveled off: around 6,000 to 8,000 steps for people 60 and older, and around 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults.

How to add steps

  • Find your current average from your phone for a week.
  • Add 500 to 1,000 steps per day each week.
  • Walk after meals, take calls on foot, park farther away.

Steps count toward the aerobic guideline when they are brisk. If you stand all shift, your step count may already be high. See Lesson 2.

Do this today

Check your phone’s step count for yesterday. Add one 10-minute walk today.

Questions people ask

Is 10,000 steps a day necessary?

No. Benefits rise steadily from lower counts; research shows a leveling off below or near 10,000 depending on age.

Do steps at work count?

Yes for daily movement. Brisk walking also counts toward aerobic minutes.

How many steps a day to lose weight?

Steps help, but food intake matters most for weight. Combine both.
